Chapter 2 VOCAB!

ABSOLUTE VALUE: the absolute value of a number n is its distance from zero on a number line.



ADDITIVE INVERSE OR OPPOSITES: a number and its opposite are additive inverses of each other. The sum of a number and its additive inverse is 0.

IRRATIONAL NUMBERS: numbers that cannot be expressed as terminating or repeating decimals.


MEASURE OF CENTRAL TENDENCY: numbers or pieces of data that can represent the whole set of data.

ODDS: The ratio that compares the number of ways an event can occur (successes) to the ways the event cannot occur (failures)

PERFECT SQUARE: a number whose square root is a rational number.

PROBABILITY: the ratio of the number of favorable outcomes for an event to the number of possible outcomes of the event.

RATIONAL NUMBER: the set of numbers expressed in the form of a fraction, where a and b are integers and b = 0.
